CALL FOR PAPERS

Digital Conference 2025:
The Future of Masculinity Studies:
Expanding Horizons, Transformative Directions
and
Critical Reflections.

A Season of Online Events
We are inviting academics, practitioners, policymakers and those whose work engages with masculinities to contribute to a season of online events that aim to shape our knowledge and understanding of men and masculinities. We are looking for submissions that cover a wide range of areas. For example, we welcome submissions that engage with contemporary theories and concepts or are developing or using innovative methodological approaches. How does engaging with intersectionality, queer theory, posthumanism, or decolonial approaches provide new directions in the study of masculinity?
We also welcome submissions that amplify the voices from the Global South to highlight the diversity and scope of our knowledge and understanding. Alongside this, we are interested in hearing about critical masculinity studies from disciplines outside of the social sciences. This might include but is not exclusive to, how the studies of texts can illuminate the limits of our understanding of the role of men, power and masculinity. We welcome submissions from other Humanities disciplines such as Fine Art, Sculpture, and Music that may not only help us to expand our understanding of gender and sexuality but may showcase alternative methodological approaches. Furthermore, this call for papers welcomes submissions in the following areas:
-
Digital Masculinities: How do digital platforms and technologies (e.g., social media, AI, gaming) reshape expressions, representations, and critiques of masculinities?
-
Embodiment and Masculinity: What role do bodies, emotions, and materiality play in understanding masculinities? How can new methodologies capture the embodied experiences of men and masculinities?
-
Masculinities and Social Justice: What is the role of masculinity studies in addressing systemic inequalities and fostering transformative social change?
-
How can the field contribute to movements against gender-based violence, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of oppression?
-
Reconceptualizing Power and Privilege: How can masculinity studies critically engage with power dynamics and privilege while fostering allyship, accountability, and resistance to hegemonic norms?
-
Future Directions for Policy and Practice: How can masculinity studies inform policies and practices in areas such as education, health, work, or family?
Registration for this Season of Online Events will cost £25 and this will provide you with exclusive access to members-only space where you can access all the presentations and submissions, list yourself in ISSN-registered conference proceedings, provide access to an online network of masculinity scholars and enter you into our prizes for the best submission, the best early career prize, the best undergraduate prize and the special Mark Justad Teaching and Learning Excellence Award.
